Within the framework of the ARCO Guest programme, the Casa de Mexico Foundation in Spain will host this exhibition from 4 March to 31 May, offering a critical review of the history of modern art in Mexico and Latin America, recovering and highlighting key figures whose presence has been limited in traditional accounts of the avant-garde. To do so, a selection of works from leading Mexican artists are brought together in Europe for the first time.
The exhibition is made up of one hundred works by some of the leading artists from Mexico, such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Saturnino Herrán, Miguel Covarrubias, Francisco Toledo and Mathias Goeritz, among others. The exhibition sets up a dialogue between creators who contributed significantly to the construction of artistic modernity in the country, through the eyes of one of the most audacious collectors in Mexico, Marcos Micha Levy.
From diverse perspectives, the exhibition traces the aesthetic course of art on the American continent, from the Mexican avant-garde to the Latin American kinetic and surrealist movements, focusing on the encounter in Paris between several artists from the continent. It also opens up to creations by North American artists during their time in Mexico, highlighting the cultural crossovers that defined the artistic landscape of the 20th century.
